Chapter Seven

Uncle Ricky called Sam into his office. “Okay, I won’t make you sleep with the enemy anymore.”

Sam sat in the visitor’s chair. He avoided eye contact and stalled by reaching out for some paper clips and stringing them. “What are you talking about?”

“I get what you were saying, and unless it’s absolutely necessary, you don’t have to deal with Mr. Fitch. I think Lois and I can handle him.”

Good. No one had reported his strut of shame from Dan’s house that morning. Sam dropped the paper clips onto his lap and stretched out his arms, enjoying the ache of well-used muscles. There’d been a lot of exercise with Dan, and they hadn’t even gotten to the main event. No one had fucked or been fucked because they’d been too damned happy with what they’d done, hands, mouth, skin... Mmm. He’d made that offer, and now his butt tingled at that thought. Dan was pretty goddamn large. “Yesss,” he muttered.

“I’m glad you’re pleased,” Ricky said. “I take it we’ll consider the matter over?”

And that would teach Sam to never think about Dan near his uncle. It apparently made him look like a very happy camper, and that wasn’t how he was feeling about work at the moment.

He put the paper clips back in their silver tray and met his uncle’s brown eyes. “I don’t think so, Ricky. I mean, I’m not even sure I want to do this sort of law.”

“Nonsense. What else could you want?”

“I think I’d rather do more family law.” Actually, he’d been thinking long and hard of becoming a public defender but knew that would make Ricky pitch an absolute fit. Sam would go from well-paid, overworked, and with a few sleazy clients to badly paid, far more overworked, and with quite a few sleazy clients.

“Are you kidding me?” Ricky demanded. “Family law?”

“Well, no. I’m not joking.”

“You’d hate divorce law. You enjoy being liked, and you will be despised.”

Sam shrugged. Ricky might have a good point there. A dog park had lost him some sleep. Could he handle the antagonistic work of family law, not to mention as a PD? It had been Dan Bailey who’d lost him that sleep. Angry blue eyes had haunted him.

Ricky gave one of his long snuffling sounds. “We have a variety of work coming through this office. Even some contentious stuff that isn’t related to Fitch and his vendettas. You want to do defense? We can manage that. I’m doing a DUI later this week. Though I think you’re too nice for some of the defense work we do, seriously.”

Sam sighed. “I’m a chicken only when it comes to you, I think. I can be a shark otherwise.”

“What’s gotten into you lately?”

Dan, only he hadn’t gotten into Sam yet. They would do that another time. But here was his uncle actually opening a door to discussion for once, and Sam said, “I’d like to do work that actually benefited people.”

“Oh, for God’s sake,” his uncle spluttered. “You do! You help people every day!”

“I’m talking about people who aren’t filthy rich.
